One of a bike’s most important components is the saddle. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a professional cyclist, the right saddle can be the difference between a great ride and a ride you will feel for days. This year, our team will be using the high-end carbon Nique saddles. They not only look and feel amazing, they also weigh in under 99 grams!
We had the chance to talk with Tom from Nique about the the importance of a good saddle. If you are interested in purchasing a Nique saddle or have any questions about the product, please contact Info@niquecycles.com.
Tom: We would like to thank the Primal/MapMyRide team members. They were directly involved in the development of the initial line of saddles, and we will continue to utilize them as an amazing resource for future models as well.
1. Why do women cyclists need women’s specific saddles? Women, built differently than men, require a saddle shape contoured to them specifically, not something adapted from a man’s shape. A wider saddle with a full cut-out is an absolute must for the majority of women.
2. What should female cyclists/racers look for in a saddle? Finding the correct width is the key to comfort – For a saddle to fit right, your sit bones must contact the top slope of the saddle. If the saddle is too narrow, your sit bones will be contacting the side-walls, resulting in major discomfort. We have included a diagram of the seat bones and contact points with a saddle in a position that is too narrow and a position that is optimal.
3. What is the benefit of a Nique saddle over another company? Nique saddles have a contoured sub-structure that was designed to specifically fit women. This provides a proper distribution of pressure to the rider. The majority of saddle makers take an existing men’s shape made from plastic and metal, slap on an extra layer of foam and call it a women’s specific version.
4. Tell us a little more about Nique: Nique handcrafts its saddles in Boulder, CO from carbon fiber. The top layer is comprised of advanced multi-density memory foam. All of this allows for a sub 99g saddle.
